Confidence isn't about never feeling nervous. It's about understanding what's behind those nerves.
When we avoid speaking up, it's easy to assume we're simply not confident enough. But often, there's something deeper going on – a fear of being judged, getting it wrong or not feeling good enough.
This journalling exercise is designed to help you explore those thoughts with curiosity, not criticism.
This is simply a space to reflect, understand yourself better and take one small step towards speaking with more confidence.

1. When do I feel least confident speaking?
Think about the situations that make you feel most uncomfortable. Is it meetings, presentations, networking or speaking to senior colleagues?
2. What am I really worried might happen?
Try to look beyond "I'll be nervous". What outcome are you actually afraid of?
3. If that happened, what would it mean to me?
This question can help uncover the beliefs that sit underneath your fears.
4. Where might that belief have come from?
Was there a particular experience, comment or moment that shaped the way you feel today?
5. What evidence do I have that this belief is always true?
Are there times you've spoken well, even if you didn't feel completely confident?
6. If a close friend shared this fear with me, what would I say to her?
We often show far more compassion to others than we do to ourselves.
7. What's one small step I could take this week?
Confidence grows through action. Choose something that feels achievable rather than overwhelming.
8. What have I learnt about myself today?
Finish by noting one insight you've gained, no matter how small.
